How you can soothe your heartburn

Heartburn can be extremely painful, and is caused by the backwash of stomach acid into your oesophagus. It can cause pain, discomfort and burning in the chest that gets worse if you bend over or are lying down.

If left untreated, it can cause damage to your oesophagus and can significantly impact your quality of life.

We’ve found 3 ways that you can manage your heartburn symptoms with ease1. (with a little help from Harvard).

1. Know your triggers

This might sound like it’s obvious, but knowing your triggers when it comes to heartburn can help you make heartburn-smart choices when you’re eating your next meal.

Some common triggers for heartburn include:

  • Fatty or spicy foods
  • Alcohol
  • Chocolate
  • Peppermints
  • Large meals
  • Coffee or cola drinks

Smoking can also be a trigger for some people, depending on the severity of their heartburn.

2. Avoid eating late at night

If you’re eating a large meal or snack within three hours of lying down to sleep, this can worsen your reflux which causes heartburn.

3. Manage your symptoms with the right medication

There are ways you can manage heartburn when it appears on occasion, such as eating smaller meals, not eating too late and avoiding tight clothing.

Over-the-counter medicines are also available that aim to neutralise stomach acid, including NEXIUM.

NEXIUM 24HR ONCE DAILY DOSING2 is indicated for the symptomatic relief of frequent heartburn, acid regurgitation and other symptoms associated with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD). This medication also comes in a blister pack for your convenience.

Make sure you speak to your doctor or one of our friendly Blooms The Chemist pharmacists before taking NEXIUM to manage heartburn symptoms.
