At Blooms The Chemist, your local community Pharmacist can work with you to help you get the highest quality sleep you can as sleep is a key component of your overall health and wellbeing.

Are you getting the quality sleep you deserve?

Sleep is complicated. Although many people think it’s as simple as closing your eyes and falling asleep, it can be a lot more complicated than that.

Getting the right amount of sleep for your age, making sure you’ve developed a pre-sleep routine and making sure your sleep environment is ideal are all things that many people need to do, but aren’t.

With one in two Australian adults saying that they experience at least two sleep-related problems1, getting high quality sleep is more important than ever.

If you find that you’re not getting the sleep you need, it can lead to chronic health conditions, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease and poor mental health2. These can have significant impacts on your mind, body and your quality of life.

Sleep Apnoea

Some people may also suffer from sleep apnoea.

Sleep apnoea occurs when your throat muscles relax too much during sleep and become really narrow. Sometimes air can get through, but it vibrates against tissues in the back of your throat, which causes snoring3.

In more severe cases of sleep apnoea, little to no air can get into the lungs, and this causes you to stop breathing for a short time between 10 seconds and up to one minute.

Worred that you or a loved one may be suffering from sleep apnoea?
At Blooms The Chemist we offer an online sleep quiz to determine your risk of having a sleep disorder and at-home sleep apnoea testing that can determine whether or not you need CPAP treatment for your sleep apnoea.

“In our pharmacies, sleep is a popular conversation with our customers who want advice on how to implement a better sleep routine. We encourage anyone who is struggling to get a good night's sleep to visit a local Blooms The Chemist and discover how they can implement better sleep hygiene practices.”

What is sleep hygiene and why is it important?

Sleep hygiene refers to a range of habits that can help you sleep well1.

If you are having sleeping difficulties, these could be caused by bad sleep habits that have been reinforced over the years.

Introducing some new habits can help you to improve your sleep hygiene and get the restorative sleep you need.

Does sleep apnoea affect children?

Although many people think that obstructive sleep apnoea only occurs in adults, it’s also found in children too.

OSA only affects around 2% - 3% of children, with two to three in every hundred children experiencing some form of obstructive sleep apnoea1.

For children, it’s most commonly caused by enlarged tonsils and adenoids.

Does alcohol affect your sleep?

Drinking alcohol is often a standard part of social gatherings and relaxation for many Australians, but its impact on sleep is often misunderstood.

While a nightcap might seem like a quick way to unwind before bed, it can interfere with your sleep quality.
