Gaviscon FAQs

Gaviscon can help soothe your stomach acid if you're feeling pain and discomfort from indigestion or heartburn.

How does Gaviscon work?

Gaviscon contains sodium alginate, which acts like a ‘raft’ or a protective layer that forms over your stomach contents to relieve acid reflux.

This 'raft' keeps your stomach contents where they belong, in your stomach, and not in your food pipe, where they can cause pain and discomfort.

It also soothes and cools your oesophagus, which means you can get relief sooner. Gavison Liquid starts to work from four minutes and lasts for up to four hours.

How long does Gaviscon take to work?

Gaviscon Original Liquid and Gaviscon Dual Action Liquid start to provide soothing relief from the symptoms of heartburn from as little as 4 minutes.*

Gaviscon is available in tablets and the form of a liquid medicine.

It's important to note that the main ingredient in Gaviscon isn't an antacid and includes another ingredient known as sodium alginate. This ingredient may help relieve reflux.

Gaviscon Dual Action contains a higher concentration of calcium carbonate that can also help neutralise excess stomach acid.

Can I take Gaviscon while pregnant?

You can take Gaviscon while pregnant, as it is effective in relieving heartburn and indigestion that may occur during pregnancy.

Many women experience heartburn or indigestion during pregnancy due to hormonal changes or the pressure that is put on the digestive tract and stomach by a growing baby.

However, if you're unsure, please speak to your health professional or Pharmacist for more information.

Does Gaviscon help with gas and bloating?

Gaviscon does help with gas and bloating, which are symptoms of indigestion.

Other symptoms of indigestion include feeling too full after eating or being unable to finish a meal because you feel full, pain or burning in the upper region of your stomach, nausea or heartburn, bloating, and burning.

Who can take Gaviscon?

Most of the Gaviscon range can be taken by most adults and children aged 6-12 years and over but it isn't recommended for children under six years of age.

However, there is a Gaviscon Infant range suitable for children aged 1-2.

If you have any concerns about taking a new medicine, please speak to your doctor or healthcare professional before starting Gaviscon or other medication.
